Lehigh Valley Folk Music Society
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
School Children's Program
As a member of the Lehigh Valley Arts Council, the
Society is proud to sponsor an educational outreach program for school children. The program, which is easily
tailored for children ranging from 1st grade through high school, is designed to present a fundamental understanding of
traditional folk music. Upon making the appropriate arrangements with school administrators and teaching staff,
representatives from the Society travel to the schools during or after normal school hours to perform a nominally
1-hour musical program. The session is interactive, involving the chldren in both song as well as playing
instruments. The content includes - what is folk music, origins and musical characteristics of
common folk instruments, voice and harmonies in singing folk music, and singing along and history of
some common folk music tunes, such as "This Land is Your land". For example, our most recent school programs
were presented in 1-hour sessions to 1st through 6th graders at Saucon and Bethlehem area elementary schools.
